The foul air of Christmas

Every year at Christmas we marvel that the God who cannot be contained by our vast universe fit into a body.

1 Kings 8:27 ► “But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!

We believers annually marvel at such and we miss the glory of it. The fact that God could descend to fit into a body isn’t low enough. It’s not personal enough.

It’s not enough that he was born with the stench of cow poop in the air. It’s not enough until you find him placed into a much smaller and smellier box than the manger.

So small it fits into a little corner of your mind.

So small it hides even from you for months at a time

So smelly that just a hint of it can turn the happiest gathering into a sad occasion.

Christmas will not be merry until the God who cant fit in the universe fits into THAT BOX.

our pain

our suffering

our transgressions

our iniquities

Now THAT is a smelly box. So foul, even we visit as infrequently as possible. But how's that workin' for ya'? How's ignoring the smell and the occasional squirts of perfume we call "devotions" working? Nope, we need more than "devotions", we need a professional excavator to go down there and clean up.

The foul air of the barn is just a warm Christmas eve story, gone before your cocoa if that's as low as he goes. No he came DOWN to descend lower than that.

Isa 53:4 Surely he took up our pain

and bore our suffering,

yet we considered him punished by God,

stricken by him, and afflicted.

5But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was on him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

God uses both arms to apply his cleansing Christmas present

1. by his wounds we are healed (Isa 53:5) (statement of fact)

2. “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” (Matt 8:26) (question)

The question digs deeper than the statement. It carries the FACT down to the PAIN and there the plumber can hammer the hell out. Many of us still have foul air that wafts upstairs too often and the answer is in Jesus' question.

Why am I afraid?

Why am I "hurt"?

Why am I lonely?

Why am I anxious?

Why am I ...?

Because I have little faith.

We all do.

We all have well thought out reasons why our pain is different, why God's descent doesn't clean our mess up ENTIRELY.

We all see physical realities as bigger than our God and we all suffer for it.

God descended lower than a manger, he descended to our pain and a mustard seed of faith is all he asks. By his wounds we are healed. Totally healed. No more stink kind of healed. Yes, we will always have pain in this world. But we get to walk through it HEALED.

WHOLE, saved from even the scent of that pain overwhelming us.

The only thing we're overwhelmed with - is the greatness of our God - and the depth of his descent!

Merry Christmas.
